We report on the trapping of single atoms in optical tweezer arrays generated via holographic metasurfaces. We realize arbitrary, two-dimensional arrays with trap spacings as small as 1.5 µm and more than 1000 tweezer traps [1]. Owing to sub-micrometer pixel sizes and high pixel densities, we discuss how holographic metasurfaces open a path towards optical tweezer arrays with > 100,000 traps. Additionally, due to the high degree of tailorability the metasurface platform offers, metasurfaces enable unique capabilities unavailable to conventional tweezer generating devices, including dual color trapping, individual tweezer polarization control, and direct trapping and imaging without the need for external high-NA optics.
