The teleportation of arbitrary quantum states is a powerful resource for distributed quantum computing, sensing and networking applications. Here we report our progress towards development of a deployed quantum network test-bed with trapped 40Ca+ ion memory nodes connected by roughly 5 km of telecom-band optical fiber. In parallel, we pursue both a free-space and cavity-mediated method for ion-photon entanglement generation. We also report on the operation of a novel 3D-printed ion trap architecture which offers high optical access to the ion and can achieve radial trap frequencies of up to 20 MHz, permitting faster axial shuttling of ions than conventional trap designs while increasing the duty cycle for entanglement generation attempts by reducing cooling overhead.
